Gisbert Lippelt, the "Cave Man," is a German former ship's officer who fell in love with Eolian Islands, located near Sisily, some 30 years ago. He took an immediate decision-quit his job (second mate of a luxurious cruise ship), gave away all his property to local peasants as a gesture of liberation, and began a trip backwards into history, you might say back to the future.
He chose as his "professors" the oldest peasants on the island and has determinedly studied their folk craft and ways of life. For a dwelling he has built a marvelous cave in the most beautiful part of the island, he lives by collecting rain water (there is no groundwater) and wood and herbs. Candle light and live fire keep him company, beautifull view with numerous volcanoes substitute him theatre and art galleries. He eats only what grows wild around him. Thus he has resolved the question of money and bills: the first isn't needed because the second never arrive. He's become an expert in the archeology and history of the islands, knows hidden caves with ancient instruments left from the old times, and secret reservoirs of water. He knows forgotten paths which lead into the depth of a long-lost past, further back than the Empire of the Caesars.
The Eolian islands, in the meantime, have been "discovered" by executives from Rome and Milan, whose villas dot (or rather mar) the landscape. The standard of living has become high and most local peasants have forgotten their roots. They live by tourism. Paradoxically, German Gisbert is the only knowledge keeper of the rich, ancient peasant civilization of the place, where people once lived in harmony with nature. Ironically, almost everything he has copied from that civilization (and it's laws had worked for centuries), is today illegal. He is tolerated and "pardoned" by local officials only because he has been turned into a "character" by European television, which focuses on his eccentricity, forgetting to ask deeper questions.

Appena arrivato sul isola lui ha preso subito una decisione-ha lasciato il suo lavoro, ha regalato le sue cravatte ai contadini locali come gesto di liberazione e ha cominciato il viaggio indietro nella storia, oppure uon potrebbe dire verso il futuro.
Per suoi "professori" Gisbert ha scelto i più anziani conatadini del isola e cominciò a studiare loro modi di soppravvivere. Per la casa lui ha scavato nella roccia una grotta nella parte remota del isola con la vista su tutti gli volcani in eruzione. Gisbert vive raccogliendo l'acqua piovana, acqua e le erbe.Luce delle candele e fuoco vivo tengono a lui la compania, la vista dei volcani in eruzione sostituisce per lui il tetro e le gallerie d'arte. Lui mangia soltanto cioè che cresce intorno a lui. Il problema dei soldi e delle bolette non esiste: i primi non sono necessarie perchè gli ultimi non arrivano.Gisbert è diventato l'esperto di archeologia e la storia delle isole, conosce le grotte nascoste con gli strumenti antichi lasciate li per secoli, e segreti raccogliatori d'acqua. Lui conosce i sentieri segreti che portano nel lontano passato, più lontano che l'impero dei Cesari.
Le Isole Eolie nel frattempo sono state "scoperte" dai wip da Milano e Roma, le ville dei quali macchiano il paesaggio.La vita è diventata agiata e maggior parte dei contadini locali hanno scordto i loro radici.Tutti vivono di speculazione e di turismo.Stranamente, il tedesco Gisbert è uno dei pochi chi ricorda i valori e i modi di vivere della vecchia civiltà contadina, dove una volta le persone vivevano in sintonia con la loro terra. Paradossalmente, quasi tutto che lui ha copiato da quella civiltà(le leggi di cui hanno funzionato benissimo per secoli), oggi è illegale.Gisbert è tollerato e "perdonato" dalle autorità locali soltanto perchè lui è diventato "un personaggio" creato dalle televisioni Europee che mettendo a fuoco la sua eccentriciyà, scordano di fare le domande più serie.
